AHJ Field Problems
Question: Do the splices for a low voltage lighting system require a box when the lighting system is powered from a Class 2 power source?
Answer: Yes, 300.15 Boxes, Conduit Bodies, or Fittings — Where Required.
A box shall be installed at each outlet and switch point for concealed knob-and-tube wiring.
Fittings and connectors shall be used only with the specific wiring methods for which they are designed and listed.
Where the wiring method is conduit, tubing, Type AC cable, Type MC cable, Type MI cable, nonmetallic-sheathed cable, or other cables, a box or conduit body shall be installed at each conductor splice point, outlet point, switch point, junction point, termination point, or pull point, unless otherwise permitted in 300.15(A) through (L).
411.1 Scope.
This article covers lighting systems and their associated components operating at no more than 30 volts ac or 60 volts dc. Where wet contact is likely to occur, the limits are 15 volts ac or 30 volts dc.
411.4 Listing Required.
Low-voltage lighting systems shall comply with 411.4(A) or (B). Listed low-voltage lighting systems or a lighting system assembled from listed parts shall not be permitted to be reconditioned.
ENHANCED CONTENT
A lighting system may be a complete listed system or an assembly of listed parts. Lighting systems have long been field assembled from individually listed low-voltage luminaires, a power supply, and a suitably rated cord or other fixed Chapter 3 wiring method. Installers typically verify that individually listed lighting system parts (regularly from multiple manufacturers) are intended for the use and have the needed ratings to create and assemble a low-voltage lighting system.
