Women in Construction Spotlight: April Souther

As part of Women in Construction Week #WICWeek (March 1–7, 2026), IECRM is celebrating women shaping the electrical and construction trades. Today, we’re proud to highlight April Souther, a 4th-Year Electrical Apprentice with Montgomery Electric Inc.

What inspired you to pursue an electrical apprenticeship, and what has kept you motivated along the way?

“I was a bartender for nine years. When the original location closed, I helped remodel the new space, which included tearing out grid ceilings and fluorescent light fixtures,” April shared. “While helping out, I started to get curious about electricity and applied for an apprenticeship. I’m very strong-willed, and when I start on a path, I like to push myself to strive. Making friends along the way helped a lot too.”

What’s a challenge you’ve faced in the industry, and how did you work through it?

“I’ve encountered some people who don’t believe women belong in the trades, but you can’t let a couple of bad apples ruin the whole bunch,” April said. “I tend to take criticism with a grain of salt but also apply it to situations in the future that can help me better myself.”

Why do you think it’s important for women to be visible in the electrical and construction trades?

“I think it’s important for women to be visible in the electrical and construction trades to show that anyone can succeed with dedication and hard work,” she explained. “Attention to detail is a valuable skill that helps projects progress more smoothly.”

What does building an inclusive and supportive workplace in the electrical industry look like to you?

“To me, an inclusive and supportive workplace is one where experienced workers don’t judge or intimidate less experienced team members, answer questions openly, and give equal opportunity to grow,” April said.

Through stories like April’s, IECRM continues to celebrate the women who are shaping the future of the electrical and construction trades.
