Inspector Perspective
Question: Are jurisdictions inspecting environmental control and signaling cables for mini-split units?
Consensus: Environmental control and signaling cables, and environmental control and signaling conductors integral to cables containing power and lighting conductors, shall be inspected per all applicable NEC articles.
It is industry standard for signal/power cables to be installed secured to the line set. This is shown in many manufacturers’ installation instructions and is an acceptable practice. The control and signaling cables utilized specifically for environmental controls less than 50 volts and not integral to power and lighting cables meet exemptions as per section 116 of title 12. Article 115, is in regard to exceptions, therein 116(15)(a) you will find that environmental controls of 50 volts or less are exempt.
