Independent Electrical Contractors Rocky Mountain (IECRM) is proud to announce a new partnership with Solar Energy International (SEI) to establish a clear pathway toward obtaining electrical licensure. Through this collaboration called the Pre-Apprenticeship Plus program, students can apply eligible training hours from SEI’s solar education programs toward IECRM’s four-year Electrician Apprenticeship Program.
This initiative comes in response to Colorado Senate Bill 165, which establishes pathways to electrical licensure for solar installation work. By aligning with state credentialing requirements, this partnership ensures that Colorado’s renewable energy workforce is prepared, skilled, and professionally recognized.
Explore the Trades Before Committing
The Pre-Apprenticeship Plus program gives students the chance to experience the electrical trades with a focus on solar energy before committing to a full apprenticeship. Through SEI’s solar and photovoltaic-specific training, students gain foundational electrical knowledge and hands-on experience, helping them determine if a career in electrical work aligns with their skills and long-term goals.
This approach not only enhances career exploration but also supports higher apprenticeship completion rates, laying the foundation for long-term success in the electrical trades.
How Training Credits Transfer
IECRM recognizes up to 144 contact hours of SEI training toward the first year of our apprenticeship program. Students who complete qualifying SEI courses and pass an IEC verification exam can transfer their training in blocks of 72 or 144 hours.
- Most students will transfer 72 hours, satisfying one full semester of first-year IECRM classroom requirements.
- Students with more extensive training may qualify for the full 144 hours, covering the first year entirely.
IECRM will evaluate each candidate’s SEI training and prior electrical or construction experience to determine the transferability of both classroom hours and work experience.
A Pathway to a Growing Career
Colorado students completing SEI’s introductory and NEC code-specific solar courses, including an optional week-long hands-on experience, now have a recognized pathway toward becoming licensed electricians with solar expertise. With electrician employment projected to grow 9% through 2034 and a median wage of $62,350 per year, the field offers strong and stable career opportunities.
