Contractor Spotlight: David Scott, Director of Human Resources, Encore Electric

Be the Best. Build the Best.

About…

With electricians in high demand, David Scott knows candidates can afford to be selective and want more than just a job. As the Director of Human Resources at Encore Electric, he oversees the company’s employer brand to attract and retain top-level talent as the company continues to grow within the Rocky Mountain West.

The message, ‘Be the Best. Build the Best’ is not just a slogan or headline. It’s in David’s DNA and ingrained in every Encore employee. It’s a powerful philosophy that characterizes Encore Electric and its culture.

David finds joy in watching employees grow within the organization. Serving with this team since 1998, he believes strongly in continuing education and lifelong learning.  “It is amazing to see what people can do when a career pathway is evident and they are given the educational opportunity to achieve,” he says. “I’m starting to see the next generation of electricians emerge, too. Even children of former apprentices, who turned into our organizational leaders.”

At the same time, David realizes it is not enough. “We need to get more people excited about the educational opportunities the skilled trades can provide.” He is a relentless promoter of the Kevin Fleming video on Success in the New Economy, a nine-minute video expanding the “college for all” message to “post-secondary education for all.” The shift in message in this video emphasizes post-secondary college alternatives and building the skills needed for the jobs of now and the future.

Most successful work habits…

A natural connector of people, David loves to collaborate with others and find subject matter experts who can help bring ideas to reality. Serving as the IECRM Board of Directors President, David ran for the board with a promise to focus on apprentice accountability and professional curriculum development. He also assisted IEC National to reinvest in professional copywriters to enhance the hard work of the subject matter expert volunteer electricians. He leads IECRM’s push to improve systems for real-time reporting of grades and attendance.

Best business books…

The Power of Full Engagement, by Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz, is about filling four buckets of energy so you show up at your best in any situation.

Leadership and Self Deception, by The Arbinger Institute, is a unique look at self-awareness in business and in life.

Greater Than Yourself, by Steve Farber and Zach Slobin, is the ultimate lesson in leadership — the power of investing in others.

Being part of IECRM

As both Board President of IECRM and a co-leader of the Government Relations Committee, David believes in having a voice within IEC on a local, state, and national level. “I have found legislators on both sides of the aisle really listen to the business community when it comes to education. The law was changed to allow equal access to colleges, trade schools, and military,” says David.

Best Advice for Colleagues, Apprentices, and Business Owners…

“L-earn,” David states. “Never stop learning to continue earning.”

IECRM Self-Pay Tuition Policy

Self-pay students who are employed with a member company must register and pay through the member company using the IECRM Flashpoint Enrollment Portal/Process in order to qualify for member rates.

Self-pay students that are employed with a member company but that do not register and pay through the member will be charged the non-member rate for tuition, books and applicable fees.

Self-pay students who are employed with a member company and require a payment plan will not qualify for the member rate and will be charged the non-member rate for tuition, books and applicable fees.

Self-pay students who do not work for a member company will continue to be charged the non-member rate for tuition, books and applicable fees.

To maximize association/membership benefits, ALL member companies are encouraged to register and pay for all enrolled apprentices utilizing internal payment arrangements and processes between employer and employee.

We value our IECRM members and apprentice community. We encourage all apprentices to be enrolled in the four-year apprenticeship program, earning, and learning their way toward Journeyworker licensure. We encourage all members to utilize the member discount for tuition, books and applicable fees to ensure the long-term support and success of the next-generation electrician.

(Payment Plans are available, please reference the Self Pay Payment Plan Policy.)

Self-Pay Payment Plan Policy

We offer the following arrangements for students that are unable to pay in full at the time of registration.
